There is an appealing background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is illegal. Eight casinos are anchored in a relatively tiny space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime area, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling halls ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are means around this, as is accurate of most borders.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau gambling hall, highlights 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of vingt-et-un, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive resort and hotel building that contains a number of conveniences accompanying the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight gaming tables.
